An ugly spider
Anyone know what this chap is (from SW Portugal)? I suspect it may be Argiope lobata.

Luckily, a local birder (originally from the UK) gave us permission to walk 200m over public land to photograph this eagle in south-westernmost Portugal. I'll e-mail him to ask permission to write these words, shortly...
These were the last photographs before the 300mm Canon lens literally fell apart in my hand.
